Summiting Sherpas Set Pair of Mount Everest Records

On Wednesday, a pair of veteran Sherpas each set a record for Mount Everest climbs.

After previously completing his 21st ascent to the top of the 29,035-foot peak, Nepalese Sherpa Kami Rita reached Everest’s summit for the 22nd time to set a new world record.

Kami Rita, 48, comes from a long line of mountain climbers and first scaled Everest at age 24. He plans to summit the mountain at least three more times – meaning he’ll set three more records.

The other record-setter, 44-year-old Lhakpa Sherpa, set a women’s record when she reached the summit for a ninth time.

Climbing from the Chinese side of the mountain, Sherpa’s trip the summit extended her own women’s record.
