On Thursday, the Davidson Wildcats football team put up a score that was reminiscent of the days when Steph Curry played basketball for the North Carolina school’s NCAA basketball team.
Setting a number of records in the process, the Wildcats knocked off the Division III Guilford Quakers 91-61 to earn their third straight victory.
In the thumping, Davidson set NCAA records for total yards (964) and rushing yards (685) in a game while averaging a gaudy 15.5 yards per play.
Add in Guilford’s (which also scored 61 points during their last game, a win) 698 yards, and the two teams combined for 1,662 total yards.
Now 3-0, on the season, coach Scott Abell has the Wildcats off to their best start since 2000.
“That’s the most important statistic – the 3-0 mark,” Abell said. “We’ve really got our option going at an extremely high level. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it quite like that.”
