Tennis Ball Manufacturing Can Be Insanely Hypnotic

For aesthetes and athletes alike, this film is a winner. Filmmaker and photographer Benedict Redgrove documented the 24-step process of making a tennis ball in such a way that a frame from each of the shots could be on display at a gallery. On assignment for ESPN, Redgrove meticulously composed tight shots in Wilson’s Thailand factory, breathing life into an assumedly-banal process.

For the filmmaker, though, it was a dream. “It was hot, loud and the people who worked there, worked fast. So much beauty in each stage. I love the mechanics of how things are made, it fills me with great pleasure,” Redgove wrote. The three-and-a-half-minute mesmerizing film shows vibrant, fuzzy orbs grow from a gray, gelatinous mess.
