These Australians Developed a Beer That's Drinkable in Space

An Australian startup has dedicated the last decade to creating a beer that can be enjoyed in zero gravity. And now, Vostok has done it. The challenge facing the startup, a joint venture between 4 Pines Beer and Saber Astronautics, had two main prongs: space messes with our human physiology (namely taste buds and burps) and there is no gravity on a spacecraft, so you couldn’t pour the beer. In order to get the effects on our body under control, the groups tested, and tested, and tested, in zero-gravity settings.

The best beer for the job is a smooth Irish-style Stout, reports Esquire. It has aroma notes of “coffee, chocolate and caramel malts.” Then, they figured out the bottle. They modified technology used in fuel tanks into a miniature version for beer. Producing space beer is not cheap, so Vostok is hoping to raise $1 million via Indiegogo in order to get this project off the ground.
