It’s not necessarily “The Greatest” of Rolls-Royces, but Muhammad Ali did drive a pretty nice car. And The Champ’s ride that he drove for six years is about to go up for auction.
The for-sale 1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Convertible, owned by the late heavyweight boxing legend for six years (though he was known as Cassius Clay at the time), was only one of 272 left-hand drive convertibles ever made. Clay bought the Rolls-Royce new in 1970, possibly to celebrate the return of his boxing license — he had it taken away when he refused to enter the military draft during the Vietnam War, citing a religious exemption.
The car has never been completely restored, and most of the original interior is intact (it’s admittedly gone through a few owners since Ali). Expect a bid of around $47,000-$70,000 during the October 5th auction being held in Belgium, as part of Bonhams The Zoute Sale. If not up for travel, you can also bid online.
