Mitsubishi’s Model A Remade as Electric Hybrid Plug-in

Etiquette says five-year anniversaries are for wood, 25th anniversaries are for silver and 50th anniversaries are for gold.

We’re not sure if Emily Post would agree, but according to Mitsubishi, 100-year anniversaries call for electricity.

To celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Model A being introduced to the world, Mitsubishi is teaming up with West Coast Customs to recreate the original model and outfit the car with the Outlander PHEV’s plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain.

What that means is the new Model A — which originally had a cast-iron engine and sheet metal chassis — will have two electric motors paired with a two-liter gas engine giving the car a 0-60 time of 11 seconds and all-electric range of up to 33 miles.

Blending 20th-century charm with 21st-century technology, the new Model A will feature all the “distinctive aspects of the original,” so be on the lookout for gas headlamps, an air-blown horn wrapped up in a body made from hollowed-out lacquered white cypress.
