In collaboration with the truck manufacturer Scania, Sweden has created two kilometers (1.24 miles) of electric road. The road features power lines that allow hybrid trucks with a pantograph power collector mounted on the truck’s frame to connect to the lines and run completely on electricity. (When off the lines, onboard engines power the trucks.)
Sweden has announced they intend to boast a “totally fossil-free vehicle fleet by 2030“: the successful adoption of more electric roads will be essential to achieving this extremely ambitious goal. (In 2014, Sweden was only at 12%, due mostly to an increased use of ethanol.)
